Alerts not working

I am not getting alerts for tasks that have an associated time. Not sure if related, but when turning these to Off the value appears as Null when reentering into settings. Regardless, I have existing tasks that I am not getting notified about even though i have it set to alert 5 minutes before. i am on ios.
